Lake San Pablo in Ecuador is affirmed as a rights-bearing entity!

In a historic ruling for environmental justice in Ecuador, a constitutional judge has declared Lake San Pablo as a subject of rights.

This landmark decision holds the Municipality of Otavalo and the public water company EMAPAO accountable for decades of environmental neglect.

The court ordered an urgent remediation plan, after evidence showed that 68,000 liters of untreated wastewater are dumped into the lake every day.

The Ministry of the Environment described the pollution level as “alarming,” warning the lake could disappear in less than two years without urgent action.

Another body of water in Ecuador recognized as a living entity with rights!
